The theme for 2023 Asian Heritage Month is “Stories of Determination.”

In the spirit of honouring Asian heritage, Sunshine Coast Labour Council invited brother Hermender Singh Kailley, secretary-treasurer of BC Federation of Labour, as the guest speaker for May’s regular meeting. He was recently elected into this highly acclaimed leadership position in November 2022, however, his background stories provided the most inspiration.

A first-generation Canadian, born to Punjabi parents, Hermender shared his stories of racism as a child and how he tried to be “un-Punjabi” and even by going by the name Herman Kailley for many years. He spoke of how he became a leader through his workplace with the labour movement.  He explained it promotes celebration of diversity and inclusion which opened up his ability to spearhead greater good causes, such as liveable wages and safe and healthy workplaces. He promotes extensive education for workers including anti-racism at workplaces with anti-racism resource kits.

In April 2023, CUPE 801 members had an opportunity to join the BC Transit workers strike rally in Abbotsford.  It was obvious to me the majority of transit workers who stood in solidarity with their union’s bargaining committee were racialized workers and Asian immigrants, which translates to members who are underpaid and treated as a replaceable member.

Everyone has the right to dignity, to be treated respectfully, and to be appreciated in the content of their character in this country.  I believe that our diverse cultural heritages make our community richer and gives much more meaningful lives.  We have many Asian workers in the public sector as essential workers in the workplace.

When you get an opportunity, please mention “Happy Asian Heritage Month” to them and be curious about their cultural celebrations and beliefs. You may find yourself intrigued by your discovery and learn something new. Life is all about continuous learning and it is always a privilege to learn from each other.
