The U17 Boys’ Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) Storm soccer team has been making waves this season! Led by a dedicated and knowledgeable coaching staff, Christian Obeck and Sean Cullen, they are currently undefeated with a mere one goal against in their 14-team Division 1 table. Their recent success can also be chalked up not just to their passion for the beautiful game, but, arguably, to a special guest coaching stint by Sunshine Coast’s (and former SCYSA Rep Boys’ coach) own Mike Cowie. His insights, tactical nous, and indomitable spirit inspired the lads to elevate their game after a few weeks away from the pitch.
The Storm’s newfound attacking prowess was on full display against Richmond United, with standout performances from players like Zach Pence and Nevin Cullen, who both found the back of the net with some spectacular early bangers. The team’s scoring this year has been well-distributed, showcasing a collective effort that underscores their cohesion and teamwork.
However, it’s the defence that truly sets this team apart. Emulating the impenetrable wall of Argentine club Estudiantes de La Plata, renowned for their “anti-football” tactics during the 1968 Copa Intercontinental, the Storm boasts a rock-solid backline. Center backs Caleb Howard and Rhys Starling have been instrumental in keeping opposing attackers at bay, while keeper Ezra Vernon is always on high alert to thwart any threats that manage to sneak through.
And leading the squad is captain Sam Pratt, whose determination—both on match days and in training sessions—has been crucial in keeping the lads motivated through the season’s ups and downs.
A member of the coaching staff certainly acknowledged key individual contributions, but wanted to make it clear that this team’s success is built on the contribution of every player on the roster: “We’ve got 16 players on the roster, and each one makes a positive impact week in, week out. We really are a tight-knit group. This team has put in the graft through their development years, showing resilience and pride as they continue to grow together as a unit.”
The Storm has their eyes firmly fixed on a coveted provincial berth, and fans and supporters alike are eagerly watching as they strive for success. The storm is brewing, and this team is ready to make their mark.
