In Richmond, Saturday, March 2, in a Boxing BC/Boxing Canada sanctioned event held at the Rain City Boxing Club, Gibsons’ Conor McKevitt weighing in at 154 lb. won a unanimous decision over the also debuting Hussain Almansour 158 lb. representing Savard Boxing of Surrey.
In the fight, McKevitt was the smaller boxer to his taller, longer limbed opponent.
To overcome his opponent’s physical attributes the fast and athletic McKevitt would craftily avoid Almansour’s punches to land his own forcing his opponent to clinch a number of times.
Throughout the fight McKevitt landed the greater number of cleanly landed punches to win a unanimous decision.
McKevitt who was, until December, a talented rep hockey player switched to boxing as his sporting interest.
In the fall of 2023, McKevitt began personal boxing training with Sunshine Coast Boxing and Fitness owner George Vourtis at 7 a.m. twice a week and enjoyed it so much that he wanted to give competitive boxing a try.
Beginning 2024, McKevitt came out to the gym for evening sparring and drills classes as well and developed quickly.
He decided to compete and was registered with Boxing BC.
To bring up his game McKivitt, is fortunate to have past Canadian silver medalist George Vourtis, past BC Middleweight Champion Marcus Davies and the talented Cam Longman in the gym to give him high level sparring and share their boxing experience with him.
With his first win in the books McKevitt eagerly looks forward to another boxing experience.
Supporting McKevitt at his debut fight were his parents, fans from Gibsons, and his coach George Vourtsis.
Sunshine Coast Boxing Club founder, and Boxing Canada certified head coach Rick Shannon was in the ring as chief second and “technical advisor” for this fight.
The Sunshine Coast Boxing Club (Est. 2008) is located at 1039 Venture Way in Gibsons and operates Monday through Thursday evenings 6 to 7 p.m. and is a member club of Boxing BC/Boxing Canada.
