The Chatelech Eagles remain hot as the senior boys enter the stretch drive of their regular season with an eye towards the North Shore playoffs next week.
The Eagles played four games in four nights starting with a huge home win over their Coast rivals, the Elphinstone Cougars, on Monday night.
Chat led from start to finish, opening up a 31-11 lead after the first quarter and cruised to an easy 106-39 win.
Aaron deJong led the way for the Eagles with 26 points while Devan Haynes had 23. Matt Skei was a pillar on defence. He pulled down a ton of boards and chipped in with 16 points. Tony Dill added 14 points while Scott Nugent added 10 points.
Roddy Campbell hit for 13 for the Cougars while Ben Wadolowski added 11.
On Tuesday night, Chat exacted some revenge for a loss last season by beating Windsor 75-56 in North Vancouver.
Chat jumped out to a 30-5 lead at one point, but a bit of a letdown from the Eagles let Windsor back into the game.
"We had high intensity in the first half, but in the second half we lost a bit of that edge," said head coach Bruce Haynes. "This is a big week for us and it's gut-check time for the guys. It's tough playing so many games in a row, but we just have to find a way to remain focused."
On Wednesday, Chat picked up a 14-point win over St. Thomas Aquinas, 82-68.
"It was another good game," said Haynes. "We've really had to fight hard this week. When you're at the top of the mountain, every team will do all they can to try and knock you off."
Chat played Collingwood Thursday night in North Vancouver. Results were not available at press time.
Playoffs start next Friday.
This week's results came off the heels of a poor weekend showing for Chat at a tournament at Highroad Academy.
Chat looked rusty after a two-week layoff due to provincial exams and lost 81-65 to Highroad, and 74-52 to Okanagan South.
Haynes scored 24 points to lead Chat in the loss to Highroad and deJong added 18. Haynes scored 23 in the loss to Okanagan.
Junior boysThe Chat junior boys have had a busy two weeks on the court.
On Tuesday, Pender Harbour played a visit to Sechelt and put a real scare into the Eagles.
Pender Harbour has not had the practice time due to a lack of a gym at the school, but that didn't show Tuesday as they gave the Eagles all they could handle.
Chat eventually pulled ahead in the second half and won 76-54.
Rod Abengoza was strong on the boards and led the way with 25 points for Chat, while Cameron Dybwad hit for 16. Bryan Allen had a strong game at guard with 14 points, and Jared James helped seal the win with 10 points.
Tucker Pantages had 21 for Pender, while Bennet Rothenberger added 16.
Last week Chat lost by three in Collingwood, despite a valiant shot at the buzzer.
"The boys broke the press set up by Collingwood and Bryan shot a three before the clock ran out and rimmed the shot," said coach Garry Nohr. "The boys felt they have come a long way this year and are looking forward to their home tournament this weekend."
Excellent commitment and good defence was played by Casey deJong, Rod, Cameron, Joel Heney and Jared.
After this weekend's tournament, the boys will be preparing for spring league in North Vancouver and summer team camp in Pitt Meadows.
Senior girlsThe Elphi senior girls lost two on the court and won one game by default to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Elphi dropped a 75-31 contest to Windsor in North Vancouver last Tuesday and lost to Windsor again Monday night 75-35.
Elphi was supposed to play Rockridge at home Tuesday night, but Rockridge had to forfeit the game due to a lack of players.
The Cougars finished out regular season play Thursday night with a home game against Collingwood. Results were not available at press time.
