The Montessori method is a child-centred, alternative educational technique based on the child development theories originated by Italian educator Dr. Maria Montessori in the late 19th century. This method of education is characterised by emphasising self-directed activity on the part of the child to stress the importance of adapting the learning environment to the child's development level.

In a Montessori classroom, children learn through discovery using materials specific to Montessori schools (for example sets of letters, child-sized household items and science experiments). Children learn to correct their own mistakes instead of relying on a teacher to give them the correct answer. The focus of the teacher is as an observer, rather than as a lecturer. While all children learn in different ways, Montessori education can benefit many children by engaging their minds and helping them focus on interesting tasks while also receiving one-on-one time with the teacher.

On the Sunshine Coast, Montessori is available for children aged 30 months to six years. Classes are taught by Kala Prasad, a certified early childhood educator registered with the B.C. Montessori Association. Prasad runs morning classes in Sechelt and afternoon classes in Gibsons. For more information call 604-989-6900.
