On Dec. 17, the Suncoast Woodcrafters Guild (SWG) presented the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS) with more than 100 handcrafted toys and gifts that its membership have been building over the past year. Additionally, one member’s spouse contributed knit toques and scarves. These gifts were be distributed by SCCSS to families in need of a little extra holiday cheer.
Since its inception 20 years ago, the SWG has been building toys and other gifts to give to families and individuals that the SCCSS works with on the Sunshine Coast at Christmastime.
This past year, 28 members built 109 toys and gifts, many with multiple components, e.g. ferry with six cars, toolbox with seven tools. Six members worked in pairs and one member’s spouse contributed 28 hand knitted items including 22 toques and six scarves.
Materials to make the toys are purchased through grants from the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Heidelberg Materials and Sunshine Coast Community Forest as well as members’ own private donations of materials and supplies.
Guild president George McKee commented, “Once again I'm so impressed with the care our members have taken to produce quality, handmade toys and gifts. Each and every item showcases the commitment, the craftsmanship and the creativity of our members in support of Community Services as they delivered “Christmas Cheer” along the Coast. Additionally, we are very grateful for the support that our community partners provide for this program.”
