Your local Army Cadet Corps, 2963 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, have been busy in the community this past training year, and they still have a number of activities planned.

From September through June cadets, have been working with community-based organizations. In November the cadets worked with the Sechelt Legion during their poppy campaign and on Tuesday, Feb. 1, were presented a cheque for $2,000 from Poppy Fund chair Kay Metcalfe.

Cadets also took part in the Adopt-a-Highway program, where they walk the stretch of roadway from Chapman Creek to the bottom of Davis Bay hill picking up litter that accumulates over time.

On Jan. 30 the cadets spent the Sunday morning making the area a little cleaner for those who enjoy the walk along the seawall.

The 2963 cadets have also been working with various charitable organizations over the years. Last year, as part of their community services lessons, they worked with the Knights of Columbus in a fundraiser that included a car wash and hot dog sale. This year they are going to spend April 2 at the construction site in Wilson Creek for Habitat for Humanity doing some work around the property to help raise awareness in youths about what it means to help those in need.

The Army Cadet program is available for youths aged 12 to 18. They meet every Tuesday night at the Sechelt Legion, with some nights' activities taking place at the Corps' training facility on Field Road. The program offers activities that help youths' physical fitness and self-esteem and provides education in survival skills. There are no costs associated with the program, and the cadets can even earn some money if they go to the various summer camps that are available.

As well as these opportunities the cadet program also offers high school credits when the cadet completes the third, fourth and fifth year of the program.

If you would like more information about the cadet program or are interested in joining, please call Shiloh Gregorchuk at 604-886-1581, or come visit us on a Tuesday night between 6 and 9 p.m.
