Letter: Shameful

Editor:

The Conservative candidate for the Southern Sunshine Coast, Keith Roy, did not show up at the all-candidates debates twice two weeks ago.

Debates allow for open discussion, accountability and informed decision-making. They help citizens understand different perspectives, priorities and policies and help voters make educated choices. They encourage critical thinking, empower participation and make democracy more opened and informed.

Finally, debates are a test of leadership. They show how candidates think on their feet, respond to pressure and handle disagreement –– all critical leadership qualities.

The people of the Sunshine Coast deserve the opportunity to ask anyone wanting to represent them questions in a debate format. Being accountable and showing up for the job interview is the bare minimum when asking to represent citizens in Parliament.

Keith Roy is ducking transparency and accountability by skipping our debates. In this critical job interview, he's a no show and that's shameful.
