The SCYSA Eagles U17 boys played an exciting game at Hackett Park on Saturday, Feb. 23 to the delight of a large group of fans. The Eagles went up against WCAGFC from Maple Ridge for a solidly competitive soccer game. The boys’ strong team solidarity and supportive coaching by Jeremy Hampvent and River Rohlicek brought the strength needed to take a lead.
WCAGFC started off the scoring in the first half. Immanuel Fadipe evened off the score with a successful hard shot started by a free kick taken by Julian Rohlicek.
The play was skilled from both teams displaying quick and thoughtful passing as well as hard sprints. Eagles 14-year-old players, Tai Loverock and Jacob Bromley, worked tirelessly to outplay their 16-year-old opponents.
Team efforts came together when Brayden Zayshley scored the Eagles’ second goal, followed by a third from Gavin Lynagh’s fancy footwork in front of the net. Strong defence and an amazing save by covering defenceman Riely O’Sullivan and another ridiculously incredible save from goalie Jake MacLean stopped further goals against the Eagles in the first half, thus finishing up with a 3-1 lead for the Eagles.
The WCAGFC boys returned hard to the field and managed another goal, bringing the score to 3-2. The Eagles stepped up their game again, with quick passes and dangles, resulting in another goal in the net by Alex Piepjohn. After a bit of a battle in front of the WCAGFC net, an unfortunate “own goal” brought the score up to 5-2 for the SCYSA Eagles.
The Eagles moved positions around during the game, Nelson MacKenzie moving into a centre-mid position and Bryan Rono stepping in to support the defensive play. Nigel Wright continued strong in his centre defensive position.
Supportive play and good pressure throughout the game were demonstrated by Rowan Evans-Moore, James Kooyman, Isaiah Hill, and Derek Ewen, resulting in WCAGFC’s mistakes and SCYSA Eagles’ opportunities for scoring.
Once again, a strong team effort led to success for the SCYSA Eagles and great entertainment for the hometown crowd.
