Paddlers power across the start line during the men’s long course 26km race at the 2014 Howe Sound Iron Outrigger race in Gibsons. The event is held every two years, and is set to start this weekend, Aug. 13 and 14.

The 2016 International Howe Sound Outrigger Race is this weekend, Aug. 13 to 14 in Gibsons.

The short course circumnavigates Keats Island. This is a mixed event (max three paddlers) with Junior, Open and 50+ categories. Race time is approximately 70 minutes on a 14 km course. This race runs at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Water conditions in the early morning are usually calm and the course is a favourite for any team wishing a shorter alternative to the iron course.

The long course – approx. 23 km – starts at Amours Beach in Gibsons. The Women and Open Mixed start at 10:30 a.m. and the Men and Master Mixed start at 1:30 p.m. The race finishes at Gibsons Wharf.

The course may be altered or cancelled due to unsafe paddling/weather conditions at any point before and during the event.
