There was plenty of basketball action at our local high schools last week as the School District 46 elementary basketball season came to an end with the annual “Play Day” tournaments.
Elphinstone Secondary hosted the Sr. Girls tourney on March 10 with eight teams divided into two pools. In the “A” flight round robin, West Sechelt cruised to a 3-0 record, followed by Gibsons 1, Roberts Creek 1 and Cedar Grove. The competitive “B” flight saw Gibsons 2 finish 3-0 with a close 10-8 decision over Kinnikinnick. Halfmoon Bay was next with a 2-1 record after defeating Roberts Creek 2.
Following the round robin for play-off seeding there were a number of exhilarating one minute overtime “shootouts.” West Sechelt continued their undefeated ways by taking the “A” flight finals against Kinnikinnick. It was an all Gibsons battle in the “B” flight final as Team 2 conquered Team 1.
The Sr. Open Division tourney on March 11 at Elphinstone saw plenty of excitement as 16 teams from Langdale to Pender were divided between the two flights. In the round robin portion, it was Cedar Grove 1 who finished with a perfect 5-0 record and a bye to the finals. A tie breaker was needed to determine the other finals participant as Davis Bay squeaked out a 12-10 shootout victory over Gibsons 1. Cedar Grove’s talented squad capped off the “A” flight championship with a thrilling 13-10 win over Davis Bay!
In the “B” flight round robin, West Sechelt 2 took first with a convincing 4-1 record (despite being short-handed due to illness). Ecole du Pacifique earned a trip to the finals versus WSE with a 3-1-1 finish. West Sechelt defeated the resilient Ecole team 14-6 in the “B” final.
The volunteer high school referees and scorers did a wonderful job both days. Additional adult referees were added to keep up with the fast-paced action. The district sports committee, team coaches and players want to thank Owen Schutz once again for helping to organize these successful play days.
Chatelech Secondary hosted the Jr. Gr 4/5 play day on March 13. The gymnasium was buzzing with energy as 30 teams from all nine elementary schools participated in a 3 vs 3 format. All the players were engaged with plenty of “touches” on the ball. The level of play and sportsmanship in each game was commendable. Special thanks to Jamie Mani and his high school leaders for their help with running the Junior tourney. Kudos to all the school coaches/chaperones and office staff for supporting another successful basketball season!
All the elementary schools will be heading in to track and field mode after the March break, with our annual district meet scheduled for late May. Stay tuned…
