The Chinook Swim Club in collaboration with the Orca Swim Club, Pender Harbour Dental and the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) have purchased new diving blocks for the Sechelt Aquatic Centre.
In the fall, the SCRD determined that the current blocks were unsafe for the patrons of the pool due to a slippery surface that has developed over time. The two local swim teams paired up and worked together to raise money towards this purchase.
The Chinook Swim Club raised $22,863.75. The Orcas raised $8,066.49 through their Adopt a Block fundraiser. Pender Harbour Dental donated $5,276.25 for the purchase of a block. The SCRD purchased one block for the public where the rope swing is located.
This was an excellent example of how the community can come together to achieve a goal. This purchase will allow many adults and youth on the Sunshine Coast to participate in the sport of competitive swimming locally. Being able to hold competitions in our community pool will promote inclusivity in our sport, making competition accessible to all and reducing the need for travel. The club thanks everyone who supported this endeavour.
