Marcus Davies stands over his opponent Cody Robertson at a match in Langley July 14.

Friday, July 14, at the Cascades Casino in Langley, the Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s middleweight Marcus Davies earned a hard-fought decision over Vancouver’s Cody Robertson, who boxes out of Ibarra Combative Arts.

The taller Robertson kept Davies at bay in the first two rounds of the four-round bout, controlling the distance between the boxers with a sharp jab.

In the third round, Davies slipped inside the reach of Robertson and scored a hard knock down.

Showing strong composure, Robertson gathered himself and beat referee Dale Walters’ count and resumed boxing as Davies attacked him trying to score a knock out.

Davies then scored a standing eight count down, from which Robertson recovered and fought back to finish the round.

Davies’ coach Rick Shannon remarked that the respected Robertson has a lot of guts and is in great condition to get off the canvas then survive a standing eight count against Davies, who is a big puncher.

In the final round, Davies forced the fight against his worthy opponent, who would not quit.

The knock down and eight count in the third round gave Davies the points edge, winning by majority decision.

“Both men are class acts,” Shannon said, “and it’s men like these who make amateur boxing so good through their work ethic and courage.”

Davies entered the fight in great physical condition, thanks to coach George Vourtsis whose coaching methods are  hard driving and straight forward, much like his boxing style.

Davies continues to work toward a B.C. title fight, hopefully by the end of the year.
