Sunshine Coast Special Olympian Christel Jensen had a fantastic week at the 2014 Special Olympic Canada Summer Games at UBC in Vancouver.
Jensen won a gold medal in the 25m backstroke and won a silver medal in the 4x25m freestyle relay with her Team B.C. teammates. In her other competitions, she finished sixth in the 25m freestyle, eighth in the 50m backstroke and eighth in the 50m freestyle.
Halfmoon Bay Trophy Run
Even by the time the race started at 9:30 a.m. last Sunday, July 13, it was cooking out there, on the hottest day of the year so far.
Sechelt’s Jordan Wilson separated himself from the pack from the start, steadily building a one-minute lead over Halfmoon Bay’s Alex Nightingale.
Meanwhile Alex had his dad (and coach) Larry Nightingale on his heels, which helped him to lop nearly four minutes off his 2013 time.
A minute and a half back, Sechelt’s Elliot Wadge, running with one shoelace untied, was caught twice by Teresa Nightingale, but he finally sprinted away up and over the last hill at Cooper’s Green.
Vacationing ultra-marathoner Steve Baker of Edmonton was next, enjoying the small-town feel of the race. Second woman was Halfmoon Bay’s Dawne Clancy, a minute ahead of teenager Taylor Mackie from North Vancouver.
Fastball
There was lots of great action and tons of runs again in the Sunshine Coast Men’s Fastball League last week.
On Wednesday, July 19, Custom Carpet picked up a wild 18-16 win over Gilligans.
Brennan Mayers, Kenny Tyson and Matt Fawcus all pitched for Custom Carpet, and Colton Vaughn and Randy Younghusband pitched for Gilligans in a game that was more about the offence than the defence.
On Friday, July 11, Lon’s Gun Show handed the Brewers their first loss of the season in a 9-6 win.
Both teams came out to play, showing strong bats and solid defence.
The Gun Show bats came alive in the third inning to give them an early lead.
The Brewers bats came alive late in the game to make it interesting, but it was a little too late.
In the other Friday contest, the Big Deals continued to stay hot by squeaking an 8-7 win against Gilligans.
Younghusband had a strong night on the mound for Gilligans, but Christina Lewis hit a two-run triple in the seventh to help the Big Deals come from behind to win.
On Monday, July 14, Gun Show beat the Jays 10-8.
The Gun Show came out strong in the first inning, jump started by Connor Cross’s home run. Nolan Lewarne contributed a double and a triple and Taylor Hanchar had two doubles to keep the Gun Show offence going.
The Jays offence came alive late in the game when Sean Gray and Steve Partridge hit doubles off Mike Sopow to make the game interesting.
In the other Monday game, Custom blasted Gilligans 17-0.
Golf
Halfmoon Bay’s Avery Struck finished 35th at last week’s B.C. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship in Kamloops. She had a 322 total with rounds of 80, 80, 84 and 78.
Keenan Flemming of Sechelt finished in a tie for 43rd at the Junior Boys Championship with a 305 total and rounds of 77, 74, 77 and 77.
Jacob Bland of Sechelt and Myles Killackey of Gibsons missed the cut after their second rounds.
