Gibsons Legion
darts
Women participating in the Coast Darts 2018 Summer Tournament.

Gibsons Legion was host to over 70 dart players from around the province along with players from the Sunshine Coast. This was the sixth annual tournament, which is now in honour of Mark Dove, who passed early last year. As an avid dart enthusiast and supporter for Coast Darts, Dove would have been pleased with how well our local players did in this tournament.

Friday night was a blind draw in which Miranda Kelliher (from the Island) and Ernie Vogt (from Abbotsford) took first place over Steve Baker (Roberts Creek) and Phil Russell (Powell River). Gibsons players Sean Turner and partner got joint third along with Ritchie Gibb and Jenn Holczer getting joint fifth.

Day two was women’s singles and men’s doubles. Deb White won over Suzie Letrud with Andrea Kobza and Sally Fong Hoon sharing joint third. Ken Kobza and Terry White won over Hedley McCullum and Roger Bernier. Joint third was shared by Phil Russell and Ryan Vanechuck (Powell River) and George Noordegraaf and Esmarch Ayugat. Joint fifth included John Gibb, Cal Gibb (Gibsons) and Ritchie Gibb (Gibsons), Willie Kwandibens and Barry Davis, Ken Gourlay and Kevin Warman, Ron Jones (both from Powell River. Saturday evening was mixed triples with prize money for first place to joint third with some fun dart games, although still competitive.

On Sunday the women’s doubles were very exciting for Coast players Selina August and Thea Mahar challenging last year’s winners Deb White and Suzie Letrud. They were happy to finish in second place with Suzie and Deb more than happy to win a second year. Joint third was shared by Andrea Kobza, Kay Gentry and Bobbi-Joe Moore, Kari Roberts. Men’s singles was also exciting with Sonny Macaspac winning over Hedley McCullum. Joint third was shared with Ritchie Gibb (Gibsons) and Sean Smyth. Joint fifth was shared with Ken Hwang, Esmarch Ayugat, Ken Kobza and Richard Aitken.

This tournament would not have been successful without the support of Gibsons Legion as well as many local sponsors as well as the dart players keeping the games competitive and fun.

Coast Darts will be starting the regular season with a local tournament starting 10 a.m., Sept. 8 at Sechelt Legion. This is an opportunity for new players to compete in a mixed doubles event for prize money. It is also a good time to sign up to a team. Registration for new players is Sept. 12.

Regular Monday night darts is planned to start on Sept. 24.

Sechelt Legion continues the Thursday night fun darts along with Gibsons Legion’s Wednesday night fun darts restarting Sept. 7.
