With the Saturday, April 1 War On The Shore 5 boxing event drawing near, Sunshine Coast boxers are hard at work preparing for their fights in front of their hometown fans.
In a Super Heavyweight bout, Graham Porter takes on a 260-pound Kelowna boxer. Porter was one of the Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s (SCBC) first members when the club started in 2008.
In another match-up of the big men, Gibsons’ Theo Kontekakis fights a 200-pound fighter from Victoria.
In his eighth fight in a year, Sechelt’s 168-pound Marcus Davies faces Parksville contender Eli Wyse.
SCBC coach Dave Hollett, a past MMA fighter, takes on a Victoria man in the 135-pound Lightweight division.
Making his ring debut is Roberts Creek’s 15-year-old featherweight prospect, Aiden McKenzie, who will spar with a Surrey boxer.
In the main event, B.C. No. 3 ranked Angela Canterutti will box No. 2 ranked Terris Smith of Victoria in a Women’s Featherweight title elimination bout, with the winner earning the right to box No. 1 ranked Gina Scopolitis of Richmond for the vacant B.C. Featherweight title this spring.
Master of ceremonies Barry Krangle will introduce the first combatants when the fights begin at 7 p.m.
SCBC founder Rick Shannon noted that this event is the fifth in the War On The Shore series as the SCBC enters its ninth year and that a number of boxers who have boxed on these shows have gone on to national competition and professional boxing.
Held at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre, the War On The Shore doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, kids 12 and under get in for free to this alcohol-free, family-friendly amateur boxing event. Card subject to change.
