Worksafe BC investigating logging fatality

Worksafe BC is in the preliminary stages of an investigation into a fatal logging accident that killed a local logger Jan. 28.

Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to the accident site near the entrance to Salmon Inlet at Xenichen Point last Friday afternoon.

According to a media statement provided by Sgt. Stuart Falebrinza, a log, which was accidentally freed, rolled down a hill striking the victim. Falebrinza said the victim was deceased prior to arrival at St. Mary's Hospital. The man's name is not being released.

Donna Freeman, director of the media relations communications department with Worksafe BC, confirmed Monday afternoon that the incident was reported to Worksafe BC as a fatality. She said officers were sent in on Saturday to begin their investigation.

"We are in the very early stages and starting to gather investigation to determine cause and whether there was full compliance with health and safety laws," Freeman said.
