After months, the trail through Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park in Halfmoon Bay has reopened to the public.
As of April 7, visitors are able to once again walk the park’s long stretches of boardwalk over a marsh to the coastline.
Flooding in mid-November initially closed the park trail, and after a brief reopening, subsequent flooding prevented safe access. Construction and repairs on the series of boardwalks began in late January, David Karn of the Ministry of Environment told Coast Reporter, as rotted railings, decking and substructure on the five boardwalks needed to be repaired or replaced.
“BC Parks has appreciated the patience of park visitors during this extended closure of this popular trail,” Karn said via email. “ The trail system has seen significant repair and is now safe and open and we welcome park visitors back to enjoy this very special place.”
The repairs cost a total of $140,000.
