A Mission man is lucky to be alive after a serious roll-over accident near Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.

According to Sunshine Coast RCMP, police responded to the accident on Sunday, Nov. 15, just after 1:20 a.m.

Originally called in by a witness as a suspected impaired driver, the witness called police to report that the vehicle, having left an area pub in Sechelt, had since crashed as a result of excessive speed and erratic driving. RCMP responded to the collision, arriving on scene within minutes. Police initiated an impaired driving investigation and the 52-year-old man was detained by police and taken to the Sechelt detachment for breath testing.

Police have recommended impaired driving charges to Crown counsel for approval.

"The driver is lucky to be alive. More importantly, no one else was injured or killed as a result," said Const. Ewan Dewolf. "The person who called this in did a tremendous service to the community of Sechelt." Dewolf would like to issue a reminder that calls of suspected impaired drivers are taken seriously by the Sunshine Coast RCMP and investigated wherever possible.

If you see a driver that you suspect is impaired on the road, safely pull your vehicle over, and call 9-1-1 or call police at 604-885-2266.

"Road safety is the responsibility of everyone and the Sunshine Coast RCMP rely on information from the public to maintain a safe environment for all motorists," he said.
