One of the biggest single-day rainfalls in the past decade kept Capilano Highways and municipal public works crews busy Sunday night and Monday morning.

Environment Canada said 40.9 millimetres of rain fell in the Sechelt area Sunday and Monday, and as much as 177.3 mm was recorded in Port Mellon.

The heavy precipitation led to flooding and small mudslides.

In Sechelt, blocked culverts caused sections of bank to slough along Fairway Avenue and Rimrock Road.  Lower down the slope, along Gale Avenue North, a mudslide estimated at 200 cubic metres forced the District of Sechelt to close the road near the entrance to the Timbercreek Estates subdivision.

Public works manager John Devison said some of the mud flowed down a driveway, but caused no serious damage to the building. He said there were no issues reported in the Seawatch neighbourhood, which has experienced sinkholes in the past.

In Halfmoon Bay, a section of Redrooffs Road near Mintie Road was also closed Monday morning, when Halfmoon Bay Creek overwhelmed the culvert. Residents reported flooding to properties on nearby Rutherford and O’Brian Roads.

There was also flooding at the bottom of Rat Portage Hill on Highway 101 that covered the northbound lanes, forcing drivers to use the left-turn lane for Jack Road to get by.

High streamflows and some pooling on the roads and minor, localized flooding was reported near Trout Lake and along the Port Mellon Highway.

Tyler Lambert of Capilano Highway Services said as of early Monday afternoon crews were still waiting for the water to recede enough to do a full assessment.

The weather also forced the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to temporarily close Dakota Ridge. The cross-country ski and snowshoe trials were reopened Tuesday afternoon.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said while the detachment fielded a few complaints about road conditions, no accidents, injuries or major damage were reported.
