People are busy and distracted at this time of the year, which is playing into the hands of thieves looking for easy targets. Two women each had their purse stolen over the past two days as they loaded shopping into their vehicles.

Purse Snatchings

On Dec. 17 a woman had her purse stolen from her shopping cart while moving groceries from the buggy to her vehicle’s trunk near the IGA in Wilson Creek.

Meanwhile, on Dec. 18, a second woman also had her purse stolen, but outside of the RX Drug Mart at Trail Bay Centre. The woman also lost her phone and wallet in the theft.

RCMP Const. Karen Whitby said it’s very important to keep your valuables secure, especially at this time of the year, when people can be distracted

Fraud

On Dec. 6, a Gibsons man reported he lost $30,000 in a bitcoin scam after a company solicited him about trying to sell AI stocks. Sunshine Coast RCMP are warning the public to be diligent in assessing the credibility of businesses soliciting the public and promising high rewards prior to providing personal information or transferring money.

Attempted fraud

On Dec. 7, a local man reported that he had received a telephone call from someone claiming to be with Telus. The man became suspicious when the caller started asking for his credit card details over the phone, so he terminated the call and reported it to police.  Be very wary as criminal entities are able to "spoof" their phone numbers to appear as though they are calling from legitimate businesses.

Impaired driving - collision

On Dec. 8 at 9 p.m., Sunshine Coast RCMP were dispatched to a report that a vehicle had struck a light pole in the 1200 block of Stewart Road in Gibsons.  A 52-year-old Sechelt female was arrested for impaired driving and served a driving prohibition.

Impaired driving

Police conducted a traffic stop on Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. of a vehicle on Dolphin Avenue in Sechelt after noting the vehicle's insurance had expired several months earlier.  An odor of liquor was detected on the drivers breath, which led to police demanding a breath sample. Two samples were obtained, which both resulted in a "Fail" reading.  The Sechelt resident was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Motorcycle vs deer

On Dec. 8 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Sunshine Coast RCMP were dispatched to a report that a motorcyclist had struck a deer on Port Mellon Hwy. in Langdale. A local male in his 50's was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Drug investigation

RCMP members conducted a late-night traffic stop in Sechelt, which led to a male being arrested for trafficking of  controlled substance. Police seized cannabis, cocaine and psilocybin mushrooms.  File is still under investigation.
