A Sunshine Coast man is back behind bars in Maple Ridge after escaping from custody and fleeing to the Coast where he eventually turned himself in to police.

Christopher Victor Nordstrom, 40, walked away from a work group on Nov. 23 in Golden Ears Provincial Park, 11 km north of Maple Ridge, according to a B.C. RCMP news release. He is serving a sentence at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre in Maple Ridge for property offences committed in Gibsons.

A Ridge Meadows RCMP search involving a search dog and helicopter failed to track down Nordstrom after it was noted around noon that he had fled from the work group near Alouette Lake. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Monday, Nov. 27, Sunshine Coast RCMP arrested Nordstrom at a residence in Sechelt. Nordstrom had been living in the Pender Harbour area the past couple years before being sentenced and has a lot of connections on the Coast, according to Const. Jason Rumming.

The RCMP learned Nordstrom was back on the Coast after receiving a report he had caused a disturbance at a Gibsons store last weekend. Police then phoned his family and people in the community within his circle. Nordstrom then turned himself in to police.

His court appearance on Tuesday in Sechelt provincial court for escape from lawful custody was remanded to the following day in Port Coquitlam provincial court. He was transferred from the Coast on Tuesday, according to Rumming.

The Sunshine Coast RCMP wishes to thank the community for assisting to find Nordstrom.
