Will I be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan in 2025?

The federal government is expanding who can apply for the program

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was introduced last year to provide coverage for seniors aged 65 and older, children younger than 18, and adults with a valid 2023 Disability Tax Credit certificate. Starting in May, the program is set to expand to reach more Canadians. Applications will open on May 1 for those aged 55 to 64; on May 15 for those aged 18 to 34; and on May 29 for those aged 35 to 54. Coverage for new applicants may begin as early as June 1, 2025.

To be eligible, Canadian residents must have a net family income under $90,000 per year, have filed their 2024 tax return, and do not have access to private or employer-sponsored dental insurance. Those who already receive dental coverage through a government social program may still qualify for the CDCP.

Applications to CDCP can be submitted through Service Canada, either on their website, by phone (1-833-537-4342), or by visiting a Service Canada Centre. Service Canada has regular outreach from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Service BC Office at 5498 Wharf Avenue, Sechelt. Upcoming dates include April 24 and 29 and May 8, 15, 22 and 27. These dates are subject to change, so always check online before visiting.

Canadian Dental Care Plan coverage must be renewed each year by June 1 to maintain coverage. You can renew your coverage online, through your CRA account, or over the phone. To do so, you must have completed last year’s tax return to verify you still qualify.

Most dental offices are enrolled in the CDCP, but it’s a good idea to check with your local provider to confirm they participate in the plan or are willing to submit the claims for your dental work. The online Fetch Community Health directory has a list of Sunshine Coast dental service providers: www.sc.fetchbc.ca. Sun Life also has an information line to help find a dentist that accepts the CDCP: call 1-888-888-8110 (then press 3, 2, 3, 3).

If you need help with the application or renewal process, including technical support, contact the Resource Centre by emailing [email protected] or calling (604) 885-4088. You can also drop in to our Sechelt office, at 107A – 5710 Teredo Street between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday. If you have not yet submitted your 2024 tax return, or returns from previous years, we may be able to help through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for those who are eligible.
