Obituary: Wendy Margaret Beckett (nee Service)

'Wendy was responsible for encouraging both her family and ours to make a journey by ship from England to Canada, it was August 1967.  There were nine of us, six adults and Mum had the three of us,  six years, three years and a six month old. We left from Liverpool on a big ship and off we went. There were many stories to be told throughout the voyage and since.'

It is with the deepest sadness that our family announces the passing of our beautiful, tiny Mum. Wendy was born in London, England on July 5 1938, she flew away on May 24, 2023.

Wendy was responsible for encouraging both her family and ours to make a journey by ship from England to Canada, it was August 1967.  There were nine of us, six adults and Mum had the three of us,  six years, three years and a six month old. We left from Liverpool on a big ship and off we went. There were many stories to be told throughout the voyage and since.

Wendy was an incredibly independent woman and goal oriented. She raised us in Deep Cove, and we made the move to Richmond after six years in The Cove. During those years she sewed most of our clothes and was a very talented seamstress. As we got older she became a Columnist for a local paper. Mum loved to dance and in her young years and was a ballerina.  She is responsible for all three of us becoming avid readers and gardeners with a high standard of work ethic. Thanks Mum. She was a giver to charity and The Smile project was important to her to help children with cleft lips.

Wendy is predeceased by both her parents George and Doris (Margaret) Service and her brother Geoff Service, who passed recently. We hope they are all together now. She always believed there was more on the other side.

Wendy is survived by her sister, Lynda Reed, her brother Michael Service and his wife Sarah, her sister-in-law Joan Service and her three daughters, Julie Beckett, Suzanne Wasend and Louise Vella (husband Danny), her two grandsons Andrew and Michael Wasend, and many, many nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to thank Christenson Village and their staff as well as Meghan from Devlin Funeral Home for their empathy and care.

The relief we feel is very real that you are now flying at will. The heartbreak is also very real.  Mum, you are so missed. See you on the other side. Love, love, love you.
