Obituary: H. Bruce Moon

'His many occupations were often only the means to support his sense of adventure. The most adventurous was his solo rowing trip from Gibsons to Alaska and back in a 14-foot, open rowboat. His many jobs and adventures provided a wealth of stories, which he was more than happy to share.'

We are sad to announce the passing of H. Bruce Moon on Saturday, November 9 at the age of 80. He died with family at his side at the Christenson Village care home in Gibsons. Bruce grew up in North Delta later calling Whistler and Gibsons home before moving into his final home at Christenson Village. Bruce had many occupations, from millworker to ski bum to logger to builder, acquiring the skills needed to build his mother's beautiful retirement house where he eventually provided 24/7 care during her last months. His many occupations were often only the means to support his sense of adventure. The most adventurous was his solo rowing trip from Gibsons to Alaska and back in a 14-foot, open rowboat. His many jobs and adventures provided a wealth of stories, which he was more than happy to share. While planning another solo adventure in 2021, a massive stroke left him hemiplegic and blind, but his indomitable courage simply turned his predicament into another challenge which he met with his unquenchable determination and dry, self-deprecating sense of humour.

Survived by his brother David (Sheila), his daughter Jennifer (Tom), and his very special friend Susan, he will be sorely missed. A special thanks must go to the care staff, initially at Totem Lodge in Sechelt and especially later at Christenson Village in Gibsons, along with his physiotherapist Liz, for their unfailingly patient and kind support during his final years. We also extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the supportive medical staff at Sechelt and Lions Gate Hospitals and his family physician, Dr. Spithoff.

At Bruce's emphatic request, there will be no service, but we will spread his ashes at Mariner's Rest on the sea that he loved. To those who wish to honour his memory, please donate to a charity of your choice.
