Ben was born in Vancouver but moved to Roberts Creek as a toddler. He grew up in "the Creek", hunting, fishing, playing baseball and soccer. He took up logging as a young man and then went to work at Port Mellon.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary and by his brother Robert. Ben is survived by his sisters Edie, Beth and Mary. He is also survived by his sons Kevin (Shelly) and Rob (Judy), and by his grandson, Brennan.
