Rob did not "go gentle into that good night”. Although he raged against his diagnosis for the past year, he passed peacefully and was grateful to be able to choose where and when to say goodbye to his loved ones. The sound of bagpipes, played by a family friend, accompanied him on his journey, as he requested.
Rob was a proud Scot who moved to Canada with his parents, Bill and Jane, when he was four. He graduated from Kitsilano High and was a bus driver with BC Hydro/Transit then worked in maintenance with Coast Mountain Bus Co. until his retirement. He had lived with his wife Toni on the Sunshine Coast since 2000, in Davis Bay for the past eight years.
He was a familiar sight in Davis Bay walking the seawall. The dogs will be missing him – he always had treats at the ready. He was an animal lover and lived with many pets over the years. He had other loves, swimming at the Aquatic Centre and friendships made there, his garden, travelling, reading, singing, and brushing up on his general history knowledge. He was a great (armchair) Jeopardy contestant.
In recent years he enjoyed volunteer work with the Bargain Barn, the Book Faire and was also a travel ambassador on the ferries. He was a 32 degree Ancient Freemason. He was a loyal and trusted friend to many. Known as “the talker”, he never hesitated to chat with anyone and often found common ground.
Rob was a good man. He will be missed by his wife Toni, children Sarah and Chris, and grandson James. He leaves many loved family members and friends in the new world and old.
We would like to express our thanks to all those who cared about him and for him in his last days. The care we received from the palliative care team locally and Dr. Wadge. Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Ho at the BC Cancer Clinic. Friends and family who were staying close and supportive. In his final days he was so happy to visit, reminisce, and have a wee dram of Scotch with many visitors, as he wanted. Hug your loved ones. There will be no service as he requested.
