Hello! It’s nice to meet you. Before we dive in, a moment to appreciate Yvonne for her thoughtful work here over the past two years. Although the logical thing would have been to ease into this first week and introduce myself, a different theme emerged, so let’s roll with that.
I’m originally from California, and every year, my kids and I visit my parents. One of my favorite rituals is my dad cleaning out his T-shirt drawer and handing his old T-shirts down to my daughter. Somehow, this exchange between a 76-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl works beautifully; she loves oversized shirts and they share a quirky sensibility. The predominant theme within this shirt inheritance? Undoubtedly, rock band tees.
Her favorite for the longest time was a colourful Led Zeppelin tee with its iconic winged figure. Last Christmas she wore it nine out of 14 days over winter break. Each day, my husband and I exchanged glances, made a comment about how she needed to change, and did nothing about it. It became like how I imagine my golden years, watching the weather. We sit on a porch with a cup of coffee. “Looks like rain, Ma,” “Yep, sure does, Pa.” Sip.
Another favorite was the Metallica t-shirt. It cracked us up –– little girl in her thrash metal shirt. She’d pass us by wearing it, we would simultaneously whisper-yell “RIDE THE LIGHTNING,” flashing the rock and roll gesture to one another, hoping not to get caught. My own first Metallica memory was around the same age, small me with a red bandana tied around my leg, attempting to bang my long-blonde head into relevance to my older brother and his friends.
Which brings me to this week’s featured event –– a premier Metallica tribute band at our Roberts Creek Legion. While Metallica might not scream “family-friendly,” great music can transcend generations…I picture my own musical interests and those of my children like a Venn diagram –– though the overlap may be small, it sometimes swells over a shared love, showing itself in the form of a loudly sung car duet or a cherished concert memory. Or recently, my son and I rushing out to see the latest biopic together, enjoying the contrails of playing Dylan songs in the days after.
Whether you go alone, with a friend, or make it a (19+) family affair, Metallica is great music with multi-generational appeal and is coming to us courtesy of Master of Justice, a Metallica Tribute Band, on Jan. 18 at 8:30 p.m. at Roberts Creek Legion.
If you don’t wish to ride the lightning this week, here’s what else is on:
• Eight-week hot yoga series: Started Jan. 5, @Om Sweet Om, drop-ins welcome
• Peanut Butter Jam: Jan. 11 8 p.m., @Roberts Creek Legion, fundraiser for Sunshine Coast Food Bank
• Improv Jam!: Jan. 22 7 to 9 p.m., @Roberts Creek Hall, a community workshop for improvisers
See you around.
