The Coast Recital Society will welcome the COULOIR duo to the Raven’s Cry Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 16 for a program that explores the rich expressive range of music for cello and harp.
COULOIR is made up of Ariel Barnes, principal cello of the Nürnberg Symphony in Germany, and Heidi Krutzen, principal harp of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. Both now make their homes in Europe but previously lived and worked in Vancouver for many years.
Barnes and Krutzen commissioned a dozen duos and double concertos by some of Canada’s greatest composers and have appeared as a featured duo with the Vancouver Symphony, the Czech National Symphony and Canada’s Turning Point Ensemble. Barnes and Krutzen will present a program that encompasses new music and one of the bedrock works of the classical repertoire - Franz Schubert’s Sonata for Arpeggione (a cross between a guitar and a cello) and Piano, transcribed for cello and harp. The lineup also includes works by Caroline Lizotte, a Quebec harpist and composer who was named Composer of the Year at the 26th Gala Prix Opus in Montreal. There’s also a duo by the celebrated Vancouver composer Jeffrey Ryan — a work called “Dvandva,” which (appropriately) means “two” in Sanskrit.
A limited number of tickets are still available and can be ordered by e-mail via [email protected].
