Letters: Why does someone have to die before we get change on Highway 101

'My personal opinion on this is maybe I would be safer crossing over midway between the two pedestrian crossings as I would only have to worry about the traffic coming in two different directions instead of four directions as is at the subject crossings however, I realize this could be a jaywalking offence.'

The following letter was addressed to Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming and shared with Coast Reporter.

I read with some remorse of the fatal accident at the four-way pedestrian crossing at Inlet Avenue and Highway 101 in Sechelt. The same thing (not fatal) had happened to three close friends of mine at both crossings at Highway 101 and Trail Avenue and at Highway 101 Inlet  Avenue in Sechelt.

My personal opinion on this is maybe I would be safer crossing over midway between the two pedestrian crossings as I would only have to worry about the traffic coming in two different directions instead of four directions as is at the subject crossings however, I realize this could be a jaywalking offence.

We know the foot traffic on both crossings are going to increase.

We know the motorized traffic is going to increase.

I was always taught never to criticize or complain unless you have an idea or a solution to the problem.

My solution is that traffic lights be installed at the Highway 101 and Trail Avenue, and because both crossings are four-way traffic crossings, program the lights at both intersections so that when the pedestrian button is activated, all the lights go to red in all four directions for the safe crossing of all.
