Letters: Reflections on wildlife attitudes

Editor:

Congratulations Tony Greenfield for an interesting history of the original bird count and a description of its present local value as “the world’s oldest citizen science project.”

Your column reminded me of the excitement of being part of earlier bird counts here on the Coast where I met many dedicated naturalists who enthusiastically shared their knowledge and continue to contribute to the health of our community.

I noticed that you pointed out the wanton killing of birds and animals in 1900. This was also during the period of extermination of the buffalo.

We are fortunate to look forward to participating in future counts and other conservation events here on the Coast.
