Letter: Universal washroom poll is deeply offensive

'I am deeply concerned that the Coast Reporter’s question will generate and normalize discrimination towards Trans people. The poll has effectively created a false narrative that the public has a right to determine if access to washrooms can be based on gender identity and expression.'

Editor:

A poll on the Coast Reporter visible on May 20 asks the highly offensive and inappropriate question “Do you agree with the addition of universal washrooms at Sunshine Coast schools?” I was extremely disturbed to see a question about human rights, access to adequate washrooms for all students, turned into a public opinion poll.

In June 2017 federal legislation was passed (Bill C-16) that included an update to the Canadian Human Rights Act to provide protection from discrimination based on gender identify and expression. The federal government, provincial governments, municipalities, and individual citizens, have a duty to uphold Trans rights in Canada.

I am deeply concerned that the Coast Reporter’s question will generate and normalize discrimination towards Trans people. The poll has effectively created a false narrative that the public has a right to determine if access to washrooms can be based on gender identity and expression. Seeing some members of the public respond “no” is both heartbreaking and extremely offensive.  For kids who struggle every day about which bathroom they feel safe using, and for their families and communities who love them, this poll is absolutely devastating.

Universal washrooms in SD46 will not replace separate male and female washrooms- instead they are an addition to the existing washroom selection to be inclusive of all genders. As a parent, I am angry that the Coast Reporter feels it has a say in how children, including Trans children, safely access the washroom in their schools.

I request that the poll be taken down and that the Coast Reporter issues a public apology.
