Former NDP MP Ray Skelly has died.

Skelly, who died July 14 in Comox at the age of 78, was the MP for the ridings of Comox – Powell River and North Island – Powell River for 14 years between 1979 and 1993.

Both ridings included the lower Sunshine Coast at the time.

Skelly was a teacher by profession and as MP served as critic on portfolios that included western economic development, fisheries, and energy, mines and natural resources.

In statement on the North Island – Powell River NDP riding association’s Facebook page, current MP Rachel Blaney called Skelly a strong advocate for the region.

“It is very obvious that the personal touch Ray brought to his work and to the riding is still remembered by many of his former constituents,” she wrote.

Funeral services are planned for July 24 in Comox.
