The 2015 women’s soccer season has come and gone, and it was very similar to the 2014 season, in that the Ya Yas won the league and the playoff tournament.
With the average age of this squad at roughly 24, and with daughters coming up through the ranks to replace mothers, this squad could have the makings of a Coast soccer dynasty for many years to come.
Though the wind was fierce and the rain left divots in the field, these women were puddled but unbowed, and trotted out game after game for yet another soaker during last weekend’s playoff tournament at Ted Dixon Field in Sechelt.
The high-flying Ya Yas started their tourney with blowout wins over the Banana Peppers and Mayhem, with goals from Kyla Muir, Angela Muir, Eliza August, Molly Joe, Kari Dixon, Jasmine Menendez, Sara Agnew, Darian August and Jasmine Samedi, but as they moved up the ranks and the competition got tougher, they ended the weekend in the championships final with a tight contest.
Likewise the goal-denying Source for Sports blanked their opponents, as fullbacks Tracey Cousins and Tara Sweet locked out opposition forwards from Blazers and Sitas in their first couple of playoff games.
In Sunday’s final, Source opened the scoring with a strike from Tricia Gignac and looked ready to lock it down, but it’s a dangerous proposition trying to damp down the Ya Yas firepower, and Kyla soon posted the equalizer. Dixon then put away the winner, and at that point all the Source offence in the world couldn’t affect the final result.
As is usually the case in the adult leagues, the Beer Cup saw a north Coast Pender team represented, flying their golden colours. Though runs to the net from flying Alvina Paul were denied, Susan Natall posted up in the box to batter in a bouncing back and forth rebound, allowing the golden girls to bring home the aluminum. Special thanks to Peppers coach Brent Sheppard for his boots on the ground, fact-finding reportage, and his excellent soccer blog all season.
Up next is the men’s championship weekend set for April 11. Look for more details on that tournament in the April 10 edition of Coast Reporter.
