Over the May long weekend, the Sunshine Coast Volleyball Club’s U16 Girls’ team played in the largest volleyball tournament in Canadian history. The Canadian Club Nationals took place over six days of competition, with 864 teams, over 12,500 players, 55 courts, and 3,184 matches played, all under one roof at the Edmonton Expo Centre. The Canadian Men’s and Women’s National teams played in their own tournaments at the same time.
The U16s had a good first day, finishing with a 2-1 record, with wins over clubs from Ontario and Alberta. The next day was more difficult. The team battled all day, losing three matches, all of which went to three sets, to very good teams from Ontario, Quebec and Alberta. Playoff day had the girls matched up with Seaside from B.C. The match was very well played, but the girls ended up on the wrong end of another three-set decision.
“This tournament was an awesome experience for the team, showing them that they can compete with any team from across the country,” said coach Darren Causon.
