Junior golfers show their mettle

Top junior golfers from B.C. and Alberta battled through rain, wind, snow - even some sun - for two days at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club at the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Veritas World Junior Canadian qualifier this week.

Top junior golfers from B.C. and Alberta battled through rain, wind, snow - even some sun - for two days at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club at the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Veritas World Junior Canadian qualifier this week.

Organizers were thrilled with the field and with the quality golf displayed by the junior boys and girls ages 11 to 19.

Rachael Shi of Vancouver won the girls 11-19 age group with a 156 score followed by Kelsey Major of Calgary with 175.

In the junior boys 14 and under, Roy Kang of North Vancouver fired an impressive 143 score to win the age group. Patrick Tan of Vancouver was second with a 150 score and Henry Lee of Coquitlam was third at 156.

In the junior boys 15 to 19, Chris Crisologo of Richmond won with a 145 score, followed by Ian Kim of Surrey with 151 and Howard Lee of Coquitlam at 152.

Two Sunshine Coast golfers also competed in the age group, with Cailean Hourigan of Sechelt firing a 177 and Trevor Smith of Roberts Creek a 184.

Another highlight of the tournament was a hole-in-one from Jake Lane of Fort St. John, the fourth of his young career.

Tournament co-ordinator Brad Ewart, a CPGA professional at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, said he was thrilled with the level of play.

"These kids are good and they keep getting better every year. The scores today were indicative of that," Ewart said. "Roy Kang and Chris Crisologo fired some solid golf. In July these kids are coming back here for the B.C. Junior Boys Championship. For the CJGA what we wanted to do is conduct a tournament now, give the kids a sneak preview of what is a very good golf course, and they found that out today. This course will play completely different in the summer.

"Over the last two days, we had snow, we had wind, we had rain, we had sunshine - we had it all and the golf course stood up well and it showed it is a great golf course."
