Did you happen to see 80 sailboats out in the Strait of Georgia over the Easter weekend?
Gibsons sailor Marc Soprovich, skipper of Sunshine, recently placed second on the Short Course in the West Vancouver Yacht Club’s 51st annual Southern Straits regatta.
Sunshine, a 40-foot C&C from the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club, was competing in one of three long distance courses. The race starts from Dundarave Pier on Good Friday morning and concludes at the lighthouse in Lighthouse Park the following day.
Soprovich crossed the finish line at 2:38 a.m. in about 16 hours. This was the first time he participated in this race and said he did not expect to place second. “The crew performed really well and the boat performed really well,” he said.
Sailors on the three courses sail distances that range between 70 and 133 nm to Sisters Island and back, racing through the night to finish the next day.
This year a solid 15 to 25 knot westerly provided an exciting race with a challenging beat up the course and a fun, fast, exciting downwind leg to the finish line.
