This last weekend – Aug. 20 and 21 – saw a record turnout for the fourth annual Coast Dart League Summer Tournament at the Gibsons Legion. Over 120 dart players from all around B.C. came out to play in the Darts BC ranked tournament.

“The challenge for next year will be to have enough space to host such a great event,” Coast Darts president Steve Baker said.

This event has become one of the most fun tournaments for dart players to start off their regular league play in September. While some are top players in B.C., dart players from the Sunshine Coast competed and placed in many of the events.

Friday night had 80 players to kick off the event with a blind draw tournament. On Saturday there were more than 120 participating, which made for a challenging and fun tournament.

Maggie Holyk took first place over Salome Fong Hoon, who came in second in the women’s singles on Saturday.

Norm Tremblay took first in men’s doubles over Sean Smyth. Saturday night was mixed doubles with Hedley McMullan and Peggy McKay winning first place over Sean Smyth and Bobby-Jo Moore.

In the final two events on Sunday, one of our local players, Ritchie Gibb, placed joint third with Hedley McMullan. First place went to Daneste Forte Dairocas and second place to Norm Tremblay. The second event was women’s doubles with another local player, Brandi Thomas, and her partner, Darlene Wood from Chilliwack taking first place over Kim Bellay-Rousselle (2016 Canadian National Women’s Doubles Champion) and Evelyn Bellay.

The Gibsons Legion donated the hall and contributed towards prize money to help make the event a success. All the work the Legion volunteers put in to make this event a success will bring more players out next year. In addition, we had the support of many local businesses sponsoring the tournament boards.

The regular season will be starting in September with an open mixed triples tournament to be held on Sept. 12 at Gibsons Legion. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity for new players to try out darts, find a team and play for the season. League fees have been $40 per player and $60 for team sponsors. More information is available on the Coast Dart Facebook page and the Coast Dart website at www.coastdarts.ca
