A 15-year-old girl struck while crossing Highway 101 in Roberts Creek on July 18 was released from hospital the same day, Sunshine Coast RCMP told Coast Reporter.
The local girl and another person were standing at the corner of Flume Road and the highway, waiting to cross to the bus stop on the other side, Sunshine Coast RCMP’s Cst. Karen Whitby told Coast Reporter by email on July 25.
“For some reason the victim didn’t appear to look to her left and ran out to cross the highway and was struck by the mirror on the passenger side of the truck driving westbound on the highway,” said Whitby. “The truck driver swerved to try to avoid her, stayed on scene and cooperated with police.”
There were no signs of impairment, said Whitby. Other drivers witnessed the incident and remained on scene and provided statements, she said.
Lesley Pritchard from BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) told Coast Reporter via email that no call to 911 was made to report the incident. A paramedic crew was returning to their ambulance station at about 4:48 p.m. when they came upon the scene.
It was within seconds of the incident, said Whitby.
BC EHS provided treatment on scene and transported the patient to hospital in stable condition, said Pritchard.
Miraculously, the girl was released later that day, though the RCMP is unaware of the status of her injuries, said Whitby.
Reports posted to Facebook on July 18 indicated that traffic was delayed for about an hour in the area of the accident scene around Flume Road and Highway 101.
No charges are being laid relating to this file, said Whitby.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said the victim was 14 years old, based on information from the RCMP. The updated information says she’s 15.
