Two people are in hospital after a serious two-car accident on Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to the accident along Hwy. 101 near Leek Road in Roberts Creek.

"Preliminary investigation shows that a small sports car was travelling southbound toward Gibsons and veered into the oncoming traffic lane," said Const. P. R. Dobson in a news release. "A full-sized pickup truck travelling northbound was unable to avoid the sports car and struck the passenger side. Both drivers were injured. The driver of the sports car was airlifted to Vancouver Gen-eral Hospital with serious injuries, while the other driver was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt with undetermined injuries."

Area resident Dennis Robbins was one of the first people on the scene.

"I was there before any of the paramedics or the police," Robbins said.

"When I heard the squeal of the brakes and the force of the crash, I knew it was bad. There are a lot of accidents in that area."

Dobson said the accident closed the highway for over two hours. Traffic was diverted while the scene was cleaned up.

"The RCMP would like to acknowledge the Roberts Creek fire department and Emergency Health Services personnel and units that worked together to assist with this accident and the extrication of the drivers from the vehicles," Dobson added.

He said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
