Lock your vehicle or face the consequences.

That's the warning message from Sunshine Coast RCMP this week after the month of June saw 28 reported thefts from vehicle with 21 of those cases due to vehicles being unlocked.

According to Cpl. Steve Chubey, only two vehicles were broken into, while nine license plates were stolen.

"There are those who are under the belief that their vehicles are safe at home or that it's OK to leave their vehicles unlocked while they do some errands," said Chubey. "Purses, wallets, iPods, change, insurance papers, mail, and sports equipment are some of the items being stolen. It may not seem like a big deal to have your mail or insurance papers stolen, however the information they get from those papers could lead to your identity being stolen, credit cards being ordered under your name and your credit being ruined. These thefts are entirely preventable by simply removing any valuables and locking your doors."

RCMP would like to remind the public to lock their vehicles and not to leave any valuables unattended, whether you're running a quick errand parking your vehicle for the night at your home.

Anyone with information on theft from vehicles or any other criminal activity are urged to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
