A 17-year-old girl is in Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) in stable condition, recovering from injuries suffered after a single-vehicle accident just outside of Sechelt Thursday afternoon, Feb. 11.
Just after noon last Thursday, Sunshine RCMP responded to the accident scene on Highway 101 at Hill Road.
According to Sgt. Russ Howard, a 1997 Ford Contour, driven by the 17-year-old girl from Sechelt, with a 17-year-old female passenger, also from Sechelt, was southbound on Highway 101 when it left the right side of the road and impacted a tree on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Howard said the vehicle then came to rest at the bottom of a 30-foot embankment.
Sechelt fire department attended the scene and extricated the driver who was initially trapped in the vehicle. According to police, she suffered internal injuries, broken bones and a head injury. She was flown by air ambulance, which landed on the highway, to VGH. The passenger suffered very minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt for examination and was later released.
Highway 101 was closed for approximately one hour while the scene was cleared and police began their investigation.
Police have not determined a cause of the accident yet. They are asking for information from any witnesses. Direct all information to Const. Johnson by calling 604-885-2266.
