It’s out with the temporary scale at Sechelt landfill and in with its replacement starting Jan. 13, which means that facility is anticipated to be closed for two days.
“The SCRD (Sunshine Coast Regional District) is confident the project will be completed within the planned dates. However, if a late start is required on Wednesday January 15 or if it is possible to open the site earlier than planned, information will be shared via the SCRD’s website and Facebook channel,” a Jan. 7 press release from the local government stated.
Spending of up to $150,000 from the landfill operating reserve for replacement for the facility’s 30-year-old scale, which failed last August, was okayed by the SCRD board Sept. 12. In a staff report considered at that meeting it was noted that to continue landfill operations until a permanent replacement unit could be sourced, a scale was rented and put in place in early September. The installation and ongoing monthly rental costs for that equipment were “upwards of $100,000" that document revealed.
The release noted that clients who need to dispose of solid waste while the landfill is closed for the scale work have the option to use the Pender Harbour Transfer Station. That location is open on Mondays and Wednesdays but will not accept loads larger than 20 yards.
The new scale will be located in the “regular location” at the landfill, according to the release. “While the [landfill] layout will be familiar to regular users, we would like to remind the public that everyone is required to drive slowly, on and off the scale and around the site for the safety of staff and the community,” the release detailed.
