Sechelt Landfill and Pender Harbour solid waste transfer stations will be closed on New Year’s Day and new tipping fees will be in effect upon their reopening on Jan. 2.
A Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) Dec.19 press release highlighted that as of the new year the cost for garbage disposal will increase to $165 per tonne from the former rate of $150.
There will also be a $5 increase in the cost to dispose of dry mattresses or box springs, with the new fee rising to $30 per item.
Accepted loads of metal for disposal will be charged $170 per tonne next year, up from the current rate of $150. The biggest jump in price of $100 per tonne will be for loads of cardboard. The cost to dispose of that material in the new year will be $385 per tonne.
“Cardboard and scrap metal are both highly recyclable and should not be in the garbage. To make sure recyclables can be properly recycled it is highly recommended to sort and store materials in a way that doesn’t impact on their ability to be recycled,” the release stated.
Landfill rates were last updated in 2021 for recyclables and in 2013 for garbage. The reasons for the fee increases were cited in the release as costs, such as transportation and facility operating expenses.
“Like many other local governments, the SCRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan and the SCRD Board support a user pay system, where the tipping fees fund the full costs of those materials that are diverted for recycling” the release noted.
Individuals who haul their own materials to one of the SCRD solid waste facilities are reminded that loads of non-separated waste will be charged at two times the disposal rate of the most expensive material in the delivery. As of 2025, the material with the highest fee for disposal is acceptable gypsum (drywall) which is priced at $1,000 per tonne.
Soil waste disposal fees can be paid for using a debit card, Visa or MasterCard. Full information on the fees and what materials are accepted at the landfill is available on scrd.ca.
