Fraud

• On Oct. 28, a Coast resident received an automated call purporting to be from Service Canada advising that it was imperative the resident press 1 to speak to an agent. The resident did, and was then transferred to someone who told the resident that his Social Insurance Number had been compromised and if he didn’t deal with the situation accordingly, his SIN would be cancelled. The resident was then asked to confirm his personal information such as his name, Social Insurance Number and postal code. It wasn’t until he’d ended the call that he realized he had been scammed. The resident was advised to contact a credit monitoring company such as Equifax and Transunion to help prevent possible identity theft.
