Thanks to a gift from a donor’s will, the Sechelt Hospital Foundation quickly approved a request for funding to replace an aging ultrasound machine in Sechelt Hospital’s medical imaging department. As specified by the estate’s executor, the donor wished to have the funds go to “support capital equipment for the purpose of enhancing patient care” on the Sunshine Coast.

On Oct. 19, members of the Foundation team hosted a “New Machine Shower” to celebrate the delivery and installation of a state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging system designed for abdominal, vascular/obstetric, gynecological, neonatal, pediatric, urological, transcranial, cardiac, and small parts applications.
The latest technology will help enhance diagnostic confidence and workflow efficiency every day in a variety of challenging patient exams.

The Medical Imaging Ultrasound Department currently performs over 8,600 exams a year for emergency, in-patients and out-patients in three ultrasound rooms and one echocardiography room. Sechelt Hospital’s oldest general ultrasound/echo dual-purpose unit was purchased in 2011 and relocated to Sechelt Hospital in 2013. It was used almost entirely for general ultrasound except for one year when echocardiography ultrasound procedures became available at Sechelt Hospital. In 2015, the hospital acquired a dedicated echocardiography unit.

The new state-of-the-art ultrasound system will improve patient access and care by reducing downtimes and providing sophisticated imaging quality.

Newer ultrasound units are also more ergonomical, and will reduce workplace strain for staff sonographers and imaging technicians.
