Bear-resistant organics bins for Sandy Hook, Tillicum Bay or Tuwanek

Pilot project will determine whether District of Sechelt will invest in and expand bear-proof organics bin program.

Last year, six new bear-proof garbage containers were installed in downtown Sechelt.

The District of Sechelt is testing out bear-resistant green organics bins for homeowners of Sandy Hook, Tillicum Bay and Tuwanek.

The bins have lids that remain locked until lifted upside down by the waste collection truck.

The details

  • Who: Residents in Sandy Hook, Tillicum Bay or Tuwanek
  • What: 175 bear-resistant green organics bins. Residents will trade in their current green bin for a bear-resistant bin. First-come, first-served basis.
  • Cost: $100 including tax. This is a one-time fee and is the price difference between the regular green bins and the bear-resistant ones.
  • If you are a homeowner (not a tenant) of a house in Sandy Hook to Tuwanek and would like a bear-resistant organics bin, you can apply now.

Important information

Only homeowners in the areas mentioned above can apply, not tenants.

Residents must bring in their current green bin on a select date to swap for a bear-resistant bin. Bin delivery is not available for this program.

These bins are bear-resistant, not proof. Residents must keep their bear-resistant organics bin in a secured location, away from animals, along with their other waste bins.

What about the rest of Sechelt?

If there are bins remaining by June 1, the program will open to the rest of Sechelt on a first-come, first-served basis. The district is not taking a waitlist.

If this program is successful, council may look at acquiring these bins in the future.

Residents who would like a bin will need to bring their rinsed organics bin to swap for the bear-resistant version. The swap dates will be in mid-May at the Operations Centre on Dusty Road. Please wait for a confirmation email and date before bringing in your bin.
