A hairless Chinese crested dog wearing rainbow pajamas has been missing from Redrooffs Road near Coopers Green since Saturday and her owners are desperate to find her.
Rachel Manley spoke to the Coast Reporter from Welcome Beach in Halfmoon Bay Monday, where she was spending the day after hearing “Lulu” had been spotted on the beach Sunday afternoon.
“I have a woman down here with a German Shepherd and we've been around the same houses over and over, so it's like she did come down here, but now we can't find her,” said Manley. “I think she'd be hiding.”
Manley said Lulu was with a dog sitter for the first time when she went missing. Manley and her (now) husband got married on Saturday at Porpoise Bay and family members staying at an AirBnB in Halfmoon Bay arranged for Lulu to be with the sitter for the day. Manley said it’s suspected Lulu somehow managed to slip through a screen door, which wasn’t fully secured.
“But, you know, the funny thing is she doesn't really wander,” said Manley of the 13-year-old dog, which is partially blind. “But the lady brought a puppy with her, so maybe the puppy scared her. Somebody said they saw her on the beach near Coopers Green, but towards Welcome Beach at 1 p.m. yesterday. So, we've actively been searching this area.”
Manley said the German Shepherd helping in the search isn’t a scent dog, but was brought in by a woman who offered to help after reading her Facebook posts. Manley wasn’t told about Lulu going missing until Sunday, the day after the wedding.
“My family got back to the house and they didn't want to tell me, because it was already 11 o'clock at night, and then in the morning they called me. I searched until I got exhausted, so I went home and tried to sleep. I got up again at 2:30 [a.m.] and I just keep coming down here. I don't know what else to do. So now I'm just sitting here because someone told me just sit and she might come out of hiding if she smells you,” said Manley, who adopted Lulu as a rescue when she was eight.
Manley noted the dog often wears pajamas due to the fact she has no hair.
“Yeah, she's wearing little rainbow pajamas. I mean, she's totally impossible to miss, but everyone down here on the beach hasn't seen her at all, so I don't know how that woman saw her,” said Manley, from Welcome Beach. “The wind is blowing, so I’m just hoping that if I just sit here, maybe she’ll smell me and come out of hiding.”
Manley said with help from family, friends and volunteers, she’s been looking everywhere for the tiny dog, including under boats and house. She also placed some articles of her clothing outside the AirBnB in hopes Lulu will smell them and make her way back there.
“She’s, my baby. Like, how do you lose a small, 13-year-old dog? It doesn't even make sense to me. And now she's out here and out here at night.”
Manley added, as if the rainbow pajamas and lack of hair aren’t enough, Lulu also has a small tattoo in her ear. Anyone who spots Lulu should call Manley at 778-229-7694.
