The image of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction was taken at closest approach on Dec. 21 by Damian Peach, a very accomplished British amateur astronomer. Multiple digital exposures were stacked and processed together to reduce noise and reveal maximum detail for the composite photo. Many of the planets’ moons are visible as well as Jupiter’s Great Red Spot.
Mr. Peach’s website is: https://www.damianpeach.com/. He not only photographs solar system objects but deep sky objects as well and displays some of his processed data from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Astronomy Picture of the Day site (APOD) archive for Dec. 21 also contains a gallery of many other beautiful photos from around the world of the conjunction.
