Community members are warmly invited to attend an annual general meeting with a difference.

On Saturday, July 12, at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre, the Lagoon Society will host a dazzling lineup to celebrate the huge contribution that young people all over Canada are making in spreading the word about sustainability. For families with kids, pond dipping takes place from 11 a.m. to noon. Find out about the wonderful creatures that lurk in the nature reserve wetland and pond. Tadpoles, frogs, turtles, salamanders, newts and insects are all just waiting to be discovered.

From 1 to 3 p.m. join in nature arts and crafts. Bring your ideas and enjoy being creative with nature.

For those interested in greening their homes, starting at 2 p.m., research scientist Bram Sadlik of Day4Energy will offer a workshop about photovoltaic solar energy (www.day4energy.com). Registration is recommended.

From 4 p.m. onwards, join society directors, staff, volunteers and members for a lively and inspiring gathering complete with barbecue potluck and a stunning theatrical performance from the award-winning Otesha Youth Project. These amazing youngsters are cycling across Canada to bring their message of sustainability directly to local people (www.otesha.ca). The evening will also feature short presentations from two highly motivated young conservationists, Katie White describing the Sunshine Coast BioBlitz and Reid Tingley with a talk entitled Painted Turtle Soup. Guests will also enjoy a slideshow and video highlighting the many activities and achievements of the society, including the popular nature school program for elementary school classes. Finally, at the formal AGM, everyone can learn more about participating in the society's activities and exciting plans for the coming year. Come early to the centre and make a day of it. Enjoy the superb new facilities, including a new wetland trail, a bird hide with a green roof, educational displays, a reed bed wastewater system and the amazing solar owl.

The Iris Griffith Centre is located at 15386 Sunshine Coast Hwy., one kilometre south of Ruby Lake. For more information about the society or to participate in our Climate Action Rebate Challenge, call 604-883-9201 or visit www.lagoonsociety.com.
